London Workshop
Dear Ed
I
stumbled upon your website as someone mentioned the Lake ratio in an on
line course of mine (World Quant University, which is non-profit).
As
I flipped through the FAQ section and especially for September, I
noticed that you are going to have events / workshops in Europe.
I live in London (UK) and would like to know more about the upcoming events and also what it takes to be a member of the tribe.
Thanks,
|
Thank you for asking about a Workshop in Europe.
I generally host Workshops in response to my perception of demand.

Value of
Indicators
Hello Ed,
I hope that you are well and thank you for taking the time to provide a
blog and answer questions.
This may be a stupid question, but I feel like I'm missing
something. Folks are always asking about indicators to
determine the direction of a trend. Can't you just look at a
chart and see if it is trending or not? Why would you need an
indicator to determine a trend?
Also, what are your thoughts on pyramiding into a position?
Have you generally utilized this process in your trading?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
|
Thank
you for raising this issue.
You can take a chart with one-day bars, stick it on the wall, step back
a few feet, determine the trend and enter orders accordingly.
You might consider you still have to deal with risk control issues such
as position sizing and stop loss levels.
People like to come up with fancy indicators and then convince their
clients these indicators have "magic powers."
The "magic" generally resides less in the exact formula you use and
more in the ability to follow your formula when you don't feel
like it.
Pyramiding, as with most trading methods, works better when you observe
risk-control principles.

Trying to
Raise Funds During a Drawdown
Dear Sir,
Good evening. I have missed out the section on the LinkedIn messaging
and a thousand apologies on it. I am very sorry.
I have been in trading for 4 years now. After a lot of trials &
tribulations, grit, making mistakes, learning, standing back up
countlessly and continuously honing, I finally managed to establish my
trading at the beginning of the 4th year. Apart from managing my
limited funds, I have only a handful of clients.
I am resolute to bring my trading career to the next level now. I have
submitted a lot of applications for trading positions. Mostly returned
no news and a few unsuccessful applications. I am under-going a
drawdown period now and perhaps this could be a factor. As cross
referenced with respectable trend trading firms’ records, drawdown
period is similarly taking place as well.
I understand, respect and accept that the current performance will
yield negative impression. However, if I am currently enjoying a
substantial profit run for a prolonged time, it will mean that drawdown
period is just around the corner. The probability of a break even or
small losses year will be higher. This will also cause a
negative impression after being accepted as a trader by any firm.
I am
currently on the flip side, whereby the profitable time is around the
corner, hence the probability in making profits is higher. Despite so,
there is a drawdown in the current performance that may be impeding my
chances to be considered by firms.
I am unwilling to be a circumstantial victim to this drawdown period.
In fact, I see it as a great opportunity to establish myself because
the current prolonged drawdown paves my way to chalking a stellar
performance in the upcoming initial years of my career.
However, I will need a chance or platform to grow on, which is
currently absent. I am extremely determined to traverse this career
path. I humbly plead for your advice / guidance / assistance. Although
I will continue to persevere, take proper and massive actions to
achieve my objective, I truly need help. Sincerely from the bottom of
my heart.
Yours faithfully,
|
Thank
you for raising this issue.
You might consider re-thinking your theory that a string of losses
infers a high probability of winning.
You can test this with a string of coin tosses - by using the results
of past flips to predict the next result.
Trend following generally benefits from a deep understanding of the
process by both the manager and the client.
You might consider focusing your sales presentations less on short-term
results and more on on the mechanics of catching trends and cutting
losses - and on your long-term theoretical track record.

FAQ in
Portuguese
Thanks Ed!
I am reading the FAQ archives and translating selections to Brazilian
Portuguese. Would you mind if I published them on a public trading
website? I promise to work diligently on the translation and to keep
the SVO-p syntax. I also plan to link every translation item to its
original entry on the FAQ.
Best regards,

Obrigado

Hugs, Fruits
and Karma
Dear Ed,
While having fruits, I realize the benefits of having them.
I remember the benefits we many receive from your guidance.
You may consider having more fruits in case you do not eat them
regularly.
If Karma theory is true, then you are accumulating lots of good karma
by helping and guiding so many people since last so many years.
Thanks for many replies through FAQ.
Hugs,

Thank
you for acknowledging me and the work - and for your advice on fruits.

Weather or Not
Dear Ed:
In reading FAQ, as I figured, your area in Texas was not affected to
the extent as Huston. Was wondering how your acquaintances and friends
you made in Puerto Rico are fairing? Hard to fathom the
situation they are in. One can do all they can on an
individual level but when the whole infrastructure is demolished and
the government is broke and has no resources to call on for repairs,
what a hell of a mess.

The
winds in Puerto Rico destroy a lot of the surface and reveal enormous
problems below.

Conscious
Parenting
Hi Ed,
Conscious parenting is going well, although I think I am the one that
is doing all the learning.
Thought you might like to read this -- as I've been working on this ...
Best
-----
Hello, and welcome to Week 4 of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids on line
course ...
... phenomenal parent -- until you get triggered!
... our own emotions ... prevent us from being the parent we want to be.
... three important components.
- regulating our own emotions
- staying connected with our child
- coaching our child instead of trying to control them.
... One of the most important kinds of coaching we do is emotion
coaching, because children are
designed to follow our lead.
|
Thank
you for sharing your process and your excerpt (with further editing by
me).
You seem to frame some emotions as bad critters that you need to corral
and keep away from the rest of the herd.
In the Intimacy-Centric model, we establish rapport and share all
feelings, without reservation of judgment.
In the Control-Centric model, we regulate our feelings, hide
our emotions and try to manipulate the other person.
In either case, children tend to follow our leads.

Two Lovers
Dear Ed,
Hope you are well.
Life sometimes stops acting like a smooth trending security and
volatility sets in.
Case in point: I've been (happily) with someone for 10 years. We met
young, grew into young adults together and developed the intimacy and
profound knowledge about each other that comes with a long term
relationship. By all accounts the definition of soul mates... Or so
would think anyone looking at it from the outside.
A year and a half ago, life would have me collide with someone new, by
whom I felt something very strong the very second I saw her. The
feeling was mutual. We spent countless hours together (work context)
and the feeling only grew stronger.
However, I am stuck. Paralyzed by choice. On one hand, there is
something very strong pulling me towards this new other person. On the
other hand, there is nothing driving me away from my current
relationship: there is trust, love, care, attention, attraction. I
wonder if what I feel for the new person is but a twisted side effect
of an endorphin flooded brain. Maybe it is the novelty factor, maybe it
is love.
Letting your profits run is one of the Laws, and my current
relationship is, most certainly, a profitable "investment". The
question is: should you sell near what could be the top (judging by the
volatility felt) and move on to the next trade, or should you stick
with it until your stop loss is hit? This, incidentally, exposes
another problem: I do not know where my stop loss is. I've been with
this trend for so long, a wider stop may all but cause it do destroy a
portion of our most cherished profits...
Looking forward to your refreshing, "wide-lens" perspective.
Best,
|
Thank
you for raising this issue.
You might consider you already have what you want, namely: an exciting
ongoing dilemma involving compromising ethics, keeping secrets and
living in fear of discovery.
This may indicate you have a dopamine addiction. You might explore this
hypothesis by noticing if you engage in other exciting
high-risk behaviors or have a fascination with switching views
between multiple pornography images.
You cannot resolve the situation by picking either the faithful
long-standing wife or the sporty young playmate. That path only leads
to decompression, endless second guessing and, ultimately, the
reestablishment of another triangle.
If you wish to give up on dopamine and go for seratonin instead, you
can commit to one or the other, likely the former and settle down in
peaceful comfort and deep satisfaction.
One way from here to there involves having all three of you sit down
together and tell your deepest feelings to each other.
This can help everyone find right livelihood. Perhaps your wife also
has a secret lover and wants a way to leave the marriage.
Perhaps you wind up in a three-way deal.
You might notice your feelings as you consider these alternatives.
You might consider taking these feelings to Tribe as an entry point.

Sharing the
Love
Hi Ed.
How are you holding up in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria rolls
through?
I'd like to thank you for all you teach me on FAQ, in your articles and
interviews. Even though we haven't met, I still think of you as a
mentor. You teach me how to think and write clearly; how to observe my
feelings and learn about myself.
I recall meeting my now wife around the time I attend my first Tribe
meeting in NYC in 2010. I notice my habit of throwing tantrums when I
feel frustration goes away over time; how I do not shut down when I
feel annoyed or angry. Today, I feel much calmer, confident and warm
with love.
Your message of "Share the Love" at the end of Govopoly
makes more and more sense each passing day. My relationship with my
wife and others improve dramatically since 2010. I feel OK about being
silly, weird and vulnerable with people. I try to let myself come out
without over thinking or worrying about how I appear.
I create my first business-related snapshot in spring 2010: "I manage a
fund". I launch in January 2011. More recently, I expand on that
snapshot and draw up a second one: "I manage $30 million for
like-minded people".
A month ago, a well-known trend following manager invests $2 million
into my fund. It brings my AUM to $5 million. First, we become friends
and then the investment occurs. The process takes ~18 months. We spend
time building rapport and sharing ideas and feelings about trading. We
discover we're like-minded.
I understand managing $30 million doesn't happen overnight, but this
represents a stepping stone to realizing my snapshot.
My other snapshots include:
Body: I weigh 190lbs at 12% body fat. (Currently, I weigh 185lbs at 15%
body fat)
Relationships: I share my feelings and experiences and do not give
advice. (Currently, I sometimes tell people what they "should" do even
if I don't use the word "should")
Fun: I own New York Rangers season tickets in section 108. (Currently,
I do not own any season tickets)
Thanks again for your help for all of these years.
|
Thank
you for sharing your process and for acknowledging me and the work.
The recent storms in Puerto Rico wind up improving my view, as they
remove a number of windows overlooking the ocean.

Trending Up
Dear Ed,
greetings from Brazil!
I am a concert pianist seeking joy in the markets, which to me means
making money so I can share my time more significantly with others,
playing and teaching the piano. After a bad start, my account is now
trending up for quite a while after I fixed some problems in my trading
with the help of bright and generous traders I met mostly over the
Internet.
I am writing to thank you very sincerely for sharing so much knowledge,
I have been studying and replicating some of your models, as well as
building some of my own. Recently I have found the EcoNowMics page and
the feedback models helped me to understand a lot better aspects of
bull and bear markets, people are baffled by crypto yet those moves
seems consistent with the feedback models.
My best wishes to you and your family and keep following the trends and
inspiring others,

you for sharing your process and for acknowledging me and the work.

Essential
Tribe Meeting
Dear Chief,
Today I teach my sons ages 3 and 5 about the basics of a Tribe meeting
- drumming, check-in, sending and receiving.
I begin by asking my wife how she feels about me inviting our sons to
have a Tribe meeting with me. She likes the idea. I
invite our sons to have Tribe meeting with me. They accept.
We head into my home office and close the door. It feels important.
We arrange our seats in a triangle that I refer to as a circle as I
explain that is how we sit in a meeting.
I explain the PM/Chief role.
I explain drumming, Check-in and sharing feelings,
sending/receiving/acknowledging and check out.
We drum.
It is like any other Tribe drumming - We eventually find connection and
then it winds down.
We check in.
My sons share feelings of calm and floaty and happy.
I feel happy, calm and lifting feelings and thank them for joining me.
They thank each other and thank me as we conclude check in.
I explain that if they would like to learn more we can have more
meetings.
We check out.
I close the meeting.
The whole process takes 25-30min.
After the meeting they play together and I decide to update FAQ.
I feel a cool tingle of amazement in the middle of my head as I think
of the ageless expressions on their faces and the feeling that they
know how to participate in the now.
Although we share feelings regularly this is the first formal
implementation of TTP I have shared with any of my children.
I would like to learn of other Tribe members that have had meetings
that included children and other immediate family and to learn of their
experiences.
As my family grows ( I have 4 young children and am expecting a fifth)
I intend to continue using Heart Rock and also like the idea
of implementing other TTP with my family.
Thank you.

Thank
you for sharing your process.

Family Matters
Dear Ed:
I visited your home for tribe meetings in Lake Tahoe in the Fall of
2003. We last spoke when I tried to change my attendance schedule to
once per month which was not the agreed Trading Tribe schedule.
After fourteen years, I am ready to take the hot seat. I ask for
permission to attend an Austin Tribe meeting.
I will take the hot seat right away after check-in so that I may learn
to emotionally heal myself, practice TTP in my life consistently as I
continue to fall back on control and criticism of My Wife while only
showing love and acceptance to my Children. My Wife has left, and only
through this pain have I been able to understand the role I have
played.
I am ready and willing to take the hot seat after check-in over as many
visits as necessary to open myself up to the Tribe before attending as
a receiver. I can excuse myself after my hot seat if the Tribe prefer I
earn the right to listen and receive the members unless they are
comfortable with my attendance. I do not want to hinder the growth of
any other member, and would be pleased to have any opportunity to visit.
Yours Truly,
|
Thank
you for volunteering to attend the Austin Tribe.
You might consider watching these pages for news on the formation of

Connect
Hi Ed,
I am currently re-reading market wizards and found your interview
extremely interesting, not only because of my interest in trading, but
also in psychology and what drives people.
Your statement that everyone gets what they want from the market
particularly struck me. It goes with my belief in the law of attraction
and how our subconscious creates our reality.
I wanted to reach out because as a young man, I just feel like we could
have a really interesting conversation about life, and I could learn a
lot from you as I forge my path. Would love to connect if you have a
bit of time.
All the best and have a wonderful evening.

Newbury Tribe
Update
Ed,
good morning and I hope my email finds you well following the recent
inclement weather.
I attach a long overdue Tribe update for the Newbury Tribe.
Simply, the Newbury Tribe continues to meet as members request. I also
continue to attend the Hertford and London Tribes as my process
dictates. All Newbury Tribe members experience challenging
circumstances in recent months and I feel momentum building within the
Newbury Tribe. I look forward to posting more on FAQ.
Finally, I wonder if you are willing to share your thoughts and
experiences of vajrayana buddhism?
Take care and thank you for continuing the FAQ and supporting me in my
ever evolving process.

Thank
you for posting the TTID, Trading Tribe Information Document, for your

Govopoly
Question
Dear Ed Seykota,
I just finished reading your book, Govopoly in 39th day, and have a
question.
Can the recent surge of tech companies be some sort of counter for the
Govopoly? Uber, Amazon, and etc seem competing against incumbent
Govopoly-benefited entities.
Regards,
|
Thank
you for raising this issue.
You may notice Uber running against the Taxi Govopoly - at tremendous
expense.
You may also notice Tesla, in alignment with the Govopoly agenda, -
receiving substantial subsidies.
You may also notice Facebook's Zukerberg preparing to run for
office.

Dear Mr. Seykota,
I am a patent attorney who has followed you for years.
One of my goals is to trade full-time however despite extensive
reading, research and trial-and-error over a period of years, I can't
seem to find the ability to do that.
If you ever have some extra time, I would truly value your guidance
regarding my situation. By chance might you be available to

sometime in Texas, Puerto Rico, Tahoe, Or the Bay area, it would truly
be an honor.
If not, no worries as I expect you are quite busy!
Cheers,
